Jackals
In Egypt, there is a large population of Golden Jackals. They are a common small-predator, and their large population is partially due to the Jackal King.
Most Jackals live in remote areas away from other creatures, in small family groups of 3-5 jackals. Occasionally there are small packs of 7-8 jackals, both family and non-related jackals.
The jackals are under the "Earthly Magical Animals" section - they look like your average golden jackal, but can possess magic.

Jackals vs KG
As it is told in Kislania's Curse (visit the archives!), long ago groups of the wild jackals split and joined the humans, becoming domesticated and eventually, through breeding and selection by the trainers, growing into the dogs they are today.
As humans themselves became more and more domesticated, they brought the KG with them as they lost their magic - and when they Believed, magic became a threat to them. The KG were bred into more fierce fighters, and ran all of the magical creatures into the most remote areas of Egypt - including the jackals they were once related to.
After they were run out of their home by the KG, groups of jackals, allied with other magical creatures, attempted to eradicate the KG- there were many losses on both sides, but the KG were strong, and resistant to magic - the magic side lost.
Then a Jackal King arose to power, he calmed his people and now very few rebels attempt to fight the KG. They stay in their remote areas and enjoy their peaceful lives, and only fight with other creatures - they give the KG a wide berth, but are always wishing the dogs would one day die off.
Some jackals still wander into city limits, but are generally chased off or killed by the Guards.

Jackals and Sand Cats
Long ago, both Jackals and Sand Cats were both being slaughtered. The Cats for the selfish gain of their fur, and the jackals for being a nuisance. Each were living in larger groups, hoping greater numbers would help protect them. The jackals had little way of combating the KG's, with their magical protection and much larger size, and the Cats had little way of combating the humans, with their more intelligent minds and sophisticated weaponry.
On one day, a group of humans were chasing down a Sand Cat - only to be stopped in their tracks by a wall of green light. Try as they might, they could only stare at the cat sitting - just as confused- on the other side. They left, leaving the cat to live another day.
The light belonged to the Jackal King, who proposed an alliance between the two groups; the Cats would help fight off the KG, and the jackals would protect the cats against the humans. The jackals split into smaller groups, and each group took a single cat with them.
Their alliance worked - they drove away enough dogs and humans for them to be left alone. Spread out, the cats were harder to find to be hunted, and with a cat allied with a family of jackals, the KG's were driven away. The two groups have lived in this way ever since - most jackal families having a cat to help protect them from the KG, and the jackals protecting their cat friend against humans and other magical creatures. The Sand Cats also provide easy food for the jackals, and the jackals help the cats by removing ticks and other parasites that may try to harm their ally.
